BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK 2017
We are proud to announce the third year of Brain Awareness Week organized jointly by BCBL and Eureka! Zientzia Museoa, to be held in San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa) from March 13 to 17, 2017.
Brain Awareness Week is global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research, coordinated by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the European Dana Alliance for the Brain.
Every year, schools, universities, hospitals, research centers and other organizations around the world come together to spread knowledge about the brain, neuroscience and other related fields.
Children and adults of any age are invited to participate in this celebration of the brain!
The activities of the Brain Awareness Week are free of charge and open to the public.
ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS (14, 15 & 16, March, 2017, 18:30 - 20:30)
Talk series
To make something as incredibly complex as the human brain accessible to the general public, we have prepared a series of talks to be given by experts in different disciplines related to the brain such as neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and linguistics. The talks cover a wide range of topics from language and emotions, decision making, perception, bilingualism, and the acquisition of reading.
Each day there will be five 10-minute talks with additional time for questions. The talks will be given in Spanish, Basque or English (see program for details).
All the talks on the March 16th include interpretation into LSE (Spanish Sign Language).
Poster session on dyslexia
This year we have also prepared a poster session on dyslexia, a developmental reading disorder. This session consists of several explanatory panels (in Spanish and Basque) aimed at answering the following questions: How does the brain process written information? What is normal reading development? How is dyslexia diagnosed? What are its consequences? How to help a person with dyslexia?
These activities aim to increase knowledge and awareness of the brain by providing accessible information on different issues of interest.
ACTIVITIES FOR SCHOOLS (13 - 17, March, 2017, 9:50 -13:00)
Workshops for our future scientists will be held every morning from the 13th to the 17th of March. The goal is to teach children about the functions and the structure of the brain through fun and hands-on educational activities. How do neurons work? How do the brains of different animals differ? How do optical illusions work? These are just some of the questions that will be addressed. Children will be also able to test their current knowledge of the brain.
It is recommended that schools reserve places as soon as possible.
Dates: 13 - 17, March, 2017
