In this talk I will present my research and ideas on performance psychology from an integrative cognitive neuroscience perspective. Coming from a background in reading research focusing on reading disability/developmental dyslexia (i.e., “weak” part of the performance spectrum), I recently turned to sport psychology with an emphasis on mental performance in elite athletes (i.e., “peak” part of the performance spectrum). How can these different perspectives be utilized in order to improve our understanding of the mind and the brain? Which cognitive and emotional processes have been neglected in the past in the respective research fields, but would be worth considering in the future? To what extent is it possible to learn about the neurobiology of language, memory, attention, executive function, etc. from research on both ends of the performance spectrum? These and related questions will be discussed in this talk.
