Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL) has just released its 2021–2024 Activity Report, which reflects a period of maturity, renewal, and consolidation.
Over these years, BCBL has reached important milestones. For example, the center was awarded the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence accreditation for 2022–2026. In addition, its researchers published 365 scientific articles, most of them in top-tier journals, and secured strong fundraising with 61 externally funded projects, including several ERC grants, achieving a self-financing rate above 80 %.
This period has also been marked by major investments in infrastructure, such as the installation of the MEG Triux Neo®, the upgrade of the Siemens 3T Prismafit MRI system, and the incorporation of the Gowerlabs LUMO fNIRS system, which together allow for unprecedented precision in multimodal and developmental neuroimaging research.
Outreach and training have also been central pillars of BCBL’s activity. The center has organized 15 international conferences, hosted more than 70 seminars, and engaged over 22,000 participants through experiments and school visits, while its master’s and doctoral programs have continued to attract outstanding students who now pursue careers in leading institutions worldwide.
“Our achievements in these years would not have been possible without the creativity, dedication, and collaborative spirit of the entire BCBL community,” said Manuel Carreiras, BCBL’s Scientific Director. “We look ahead with confidence, eager to continue contributing to scientific excellence, training the next generation of researchers, and developing solutions that improve people’s lives.”
