Speech perception is auditory-visual. This is well-known.

By presenting data on some less well-known aspects of auditory-visual speech perception, I will strengthen the case for its integral and pervasive role in language processing and language development. I will cover:

    Ubiquity: Auditory-visual speech perception of lexical tone, and of phonetic level auditory-visual non-native speech processing
    Within-Language Development: In infants and toddlers with reference to perceptual attunement
    Between-Language Development:  Auditory-visual speech perception differences between languages
    Developmental Locus: When auditory-visual speech perception diverges across languages.
    Functional Locus: Why auditory-visual speech perception diverges across languages – the second period of perceptual attunement, reading, and dyslexia.
