The thalamus is the gateway for external information into the cerebral cortex. Functional understanding of the circuits between thalamus and cortex remains strongly influenced by the striking point-to-point topography of the so-called “specific” thalamocortical (TC) pathways and their experimentally accessible ability to gate sensory-triggered input to the cortex. However, recent single-cell labeling studies are revealing a picture of diverse circuit architectures able to support multiple and complex modes of dynamic interaction.
