The detection of terrestrial planets is a challenge of the first magnitude. Today we know that a large fraction of Stars similar to the Sun have planetary systems. Moreover, it is probable that in our Galaxy there are more than fifty billion of these systems. We will review the current status of searches for planets similar to the Earth, especially in nearby stars, and describe the techniques used and the technological advances that they require.
