  • The research center shares the reasons that make it special and that have established it as an international reference in cognitive neuroscience.

Neuroscience, as a discipline, addresses significant challenges such as neurodegenerative diseases, understanding the mechanisms underlying learning, memory and cognitive dysfunctions.

The Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL) in San Sebastian is committed to exploring and understanding brain processes related to cognition and language. It addresses these challenges through innovative research that seeks to disentangle how the human brain processes and manages language, producing advances that not only enrich scientific knowledge but also have a direct impact on improving people's quality of life.

Disorders like dyslexia are an important focus of the research work carried out at the BCBL, which seeks to identify their neurobiological bases and develop interventions that can help affected people lead a fuller and more productive life.

All this and much more is presented in the new BCBL corporate video “Decoding the mind”, which features the International Scientific Advisory Committee members, managers and the global and heterogeneous research staff that contribute to the center’s success. The reasons that make the BCBL such a special and cutting-edge center are narrated by their voices in this documentary.

State of-the-art facilities

Firstly, BCBL stands out for its state-of-the-art facilities, which are essential for the advanced research carried out at the center.

The center has neuroimaging technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), which allow researchers to observe how the brain processes language and other cognitive functions in real time.

In addition, the center has laboratories equipped with electroencephalography (EEG) devices and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. This infrastructure is crucial for carrying out detailed and accurate studies, establishing the BCBL as a leader in the field of neuroscience.

Collaboration and internationalisation

The center also promotes collaborations with other internationally renowned research centers, which are essential for the development of its projects. These alliances allow the exchange of knowledge and resources, enriching the research and facilitating discoveries.

Likewise, one of the center’s priorities is internationalisation, attracting global talent and taking part in international projects. This collaboration network not only intensifies BCBL’s research impact but also strengthens its capacity to deal with challenging problems from multiple perspectives, cultures and ways of understanding the world.

San Sebastian, a strategic location

Finally, the BCBL is also special due to its location in Donostia-San Sebastian. The capital of Gipuzkoa, as well as the Basque Country, the city provides the center with a favorable environment for research.

The Basque Country is a bilingual region, which provides the ideal setting to enrich the center’s research and offers a deeper understanding of how the brain handles multiple languages. Being located in a bilingual or trilingual environment is a differentiating factor that contributes significantly to studies on cognition and language.

These aspects, together with the intense scientific production generated by the BCBL each year, have consolidated the center as a reference in neuroscientific research.

About  the BCBL

The Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language is an international interdisciplinary research center based in San Sebastián for the study of cognition, brain and language. It is supported by the Basque Government with the aim of promoting science and research in the Basque Country. Its partners include Ikerbasque, Innobasque, the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
